What is your favorite kind of trance??? Yesterday we talked about getting sucked into drama as a way of avoiding the reality of our own present moment. What else puts you in a trance? With all of the distractions available how can we even tell the difference between zoning out, going on auto-pilot and being awake to the present moment? It’s important to know the difference. Only then will we know we are awake. Only then can we let go.
We don’t know we are sleeping until we wake up. Remembering these “trance” times make you less vulnerable to them.
Today’s letting go exercise ~ break free from the trance:
- Think of time recently when you were distracted by something or someone for a period of hours or longer – A incident were there was a sense of lost time. For example, have you ever been on your routine drive home from work when you suddenly realize you are about to turn into your driveway but don’t remember getting off the highway? Have your ever zoned out in front of a TV for half a day, suddenly realizing that you missed a chance to exercise or hang out with a friend? Chances are you didn’t feel refreshed or nourished by these experiences. We don’t know we are sleeping until we wake up. Remembering these “trance” times make you less vulnerable to them.
If it’s a true instance of being in the moment, you will feel renewed and nourished after the event. At the very least you will feel a sense of accomplishment as opposed to the feeling of depletion that often follows a trance-state.
2. Now think about a recent time, where you felt completely in the moment. You felt alert, and relaxed… in the flow. Maybe it was apple picking on a perfect Autumn day, or helping a friend through a difficult situation. Danger! do you see how the last example can slip into the “drama trance” if you are perpetually neglecting your own needs for someone else? If it’s a true instance of being in the moment, you will feel renewed and nourished after the event. At the very least you will feel a sense of accomplishment as opposed to the feeling of depletion that often follows a trance-state.
Why is it important to break free from habitual trance-states? It’s often the first step in letting go. Of course, there is a whole spectrum of trance states. If you are struggling with a dangerous trance, like substance abuse, or an eating disorder, ask for help. Let it go. Fall up.
