With technology constantly improving, we can find ourselves spending hours staring at a screen, whether it’s the TV, computer, iPod, or phone. We’ve become accustomed to sending our friends a facebook message and texting them all day long. We can of course try to cut down our time spent in front of the screen, but it can be hard. Especially for people that require spending hours in front of a computer at work for for students spending long hours completing assignments. If you find yourself unable to cut down on your screen time, it might be time to mix in a bit of mindfulness.
The trick is to be aware of the effects technology is having on your thinking, your mind, and your brain. Be the boss of your technological gadgets – don’t let them be the boss of you!
First off, are you multi-tasking? Is there a TV on in the room while you’re surfing the web, with a phone nearby for texting at any moment? Do you really need all three at the same time? Sticking to one at a time will help you stay present. Now, ask yourself this: what brought you here to the internet right now? Were you just going to check an email and suddenly it’s three hours later? Asking yourself these questions can help you stay aware. When going on a computer or turning on the TV, try to ask yourself if you really need it. If you do, limit the amount of time spent, and try to stay away from another screen immediately afterwards.
Think about it- do you really want to spend your days mindlessly staring at screens, with your brain on autopilot? Remaining mindful, even when checking twitter or facebook, can keep you aware and present. The trick is to be aware of the effects technology is having on your thinking, your mind, and your brain. Be the boss of your technological gadgets – don’t let them be the boss of you! There are numerous benefits to having an aware, mindful brain such as speed, attention, memory, problem solving, and flexibility.
