Voldemort happens. It’s how we respond to Voldemort that really matters. This is just one of the lessons in mindfulness that J.K. Rowling has helped me to convey to my four children over the last thirteen years. My oldest son was only seven years old when I read a review of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in Family Fun Magazine. Little did I know that purchasing that book would send us on a 13-year oddessey. Like all families, we went through some incredible ups and downs during those 13 years. But through it all, we had Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Now we have wonderful memories of waiting in line at our local bookstore at midnight, dressed in robes and Mrs. Weasley knock-off sweaters in the middle of July, my son crying when Hagrid was sent to Askaban, my daughter and I giggling and tearful as Ron and Hermione finally kiss on the big screen!
mindfulness is a little like magic. It has the ability to transform our minds by helping us remember what is good, and remind us that the “bad” is impermanent.
One of the benefits of practicing mindfulness is cultivating the ability to really take in and imprint in your memory the happy and important times in your life. It’s especially important for children to take in these good memories and store them away, and to be able to call on them later when the going gets tough – and as we learned through watching Harry and his friends, the going can get tough.
In this way, mindfulness is a little like magic. It has the ability to transform our minds by helping us remember what is good, and remind us that the “bad” is impermanent, and as Dumbledore taught us all, what is happening in our mind is our reality. Mindfulness can transform your reality, literally changing your brain and your mind, helping you quiet the passing distractions and remember what’s important.
Thanks J.K. Rowling, for giving us wonderful moments of mindfulness.
